WHEN TO STOP TRAINING

No workouts should be considered if there is swelling or when one cannot run/walk with a normal stride. Mild pain can be expected when returning to workouts. There should be a reduction in the duration and intensity, however. If the improvement slows or stops, take more rest days.

CONSEQUENCES OF RUNNING/WALKING THROUGH PAIN

When an ankle is swollen and painful, it cannot protect the cartilage surfaces and tendons from stress. The body shifts to a healing/protection mode, and doesn’t adapt to exercise until enough damage has been repaired. If the ankle is overused during this time, healing slows or stops, and more damage can be produced.
